At the present moment the fleet is all lit up And when I say it’s all lit up I mean by fairy lamps And as far as I can see for 6 or 7 miles The whole fleet is lit up, lit up by fairy lamps The whole thing is fairy land, the ships are all lit up Even the destroyers, the ships are all lit up And now there’s nothing at all inbetween us and heaven Now there’s nothing at all The ships have gone, the fleet has disappeared We’re gonna fire a rocket, we’re gonna fire off all sorts You won’t ever see them but you’ll hear them going off You’ll hear my reaction when I see them going off I’ll tell you what they look like as I see the going off And now there’s nothing at all inbetween us and heaven Now there’s nothing at all At a signal by morse code And now there’s nothing at all inbetween us and heaven Now there’s nothing at all The ships have gone, the fleet has disappeared No magician who ever waved his wand Did it with more acumen than at the present time And now there’s nothing at all inbetween us and heaven Now there’s nothing at all At a signal by morse code And now there’s nothing at all inbetween us and heaven Now there’s nothing at all The ships have gone, the fleet has disappeared

UNBURDENED 02:39
Words are impossibility Blood and womb an impossibility Brick wall is impossibility But love exists in impossibility Do I know you? Can you know me? Maybe we can both remember. Maybe not Memory is a possibility Connection is a possibility You are part of me And I’m still part of you You still exist. As do I. Possible impossibilty. Memory impossibility Words are impossibility Blood and womb an impossibility Brick wall is impossibility But love exists in impossibility Do I know you? Can you know me? Maybe we can both remember. Maybe not

Battle of the beefcakes Battle of the beefcakes Battle of the beefcakes la la la la la la There’s going to be a battle of the beefcake boys. Tonight ! There’s going to be a battle of the beefcake boys. Tonight ! They’ll be fighting on the beach with everything in reach When the beefcakes fight tonight

Every time I think about it I start to feel sick about it All the times they took me for a ride Every time I tried to break free A feeling of inertia gripped me And I reached for another glass of wine The global conspiracy To drive me insane I’ll never get compensation For the character assassination When they slandered my my name all over town Now I’m waiting at the station For a train that will bring slavation Never gonna get to see this town again The global conspiracy To drive me insane It’s a global conspiracy Everybody’s got it in for me It’s a global conspiracy Every time I think about I start to feel sick about it All the times they took me for a ride Now I’m living isolation Far away from the population Got a shadow hanging over me The global conspiracy To drive me insane

It’s so hard To say goodbye In any place or any time It’s harder still Through meshed wire Crisscrossed lines across your eyes A stencilled graticule Like broken molecules A rigid frame around each kiss Greek tragedy Falling from great heights In my life it’s from the kerb I finished off My seventh beer Loss of hope replaced by tears A stencilled graticule Like broken molecules A rigid frame around each kiss We don’t know When the sun turned cold But we both know that it did Winter evening light Fanned into the colours The nameless tunnels of the night A stencilled graticule Like broken molecules A rigid frame around each kiss

DEVOTION 03:24
There’s no reason why I’d be disloyal I could never be unkind Something special I don’t want spoil I’ll be waiting at your table Just as long as I am able You just need to send the cable And I’ll be there right away There’s no reason why I would destroy The happy home that we have found Cos I know this is the real McCoy I’ll be waiting at your table Just as long as I am able You just need to send the cable And I’ll be there right away Do what you want to do And I will follow you But when all is said and done Everybody wants their fun Tell me something that I don’t know already Or play your cards close to your chest Bring me closer cos you know I’m ready I’ll be waiting at your table Just as long as I am able You just need to send the cable And I’ll be there right away

Won’t you fire your rockets into me I’m a sitting target and your sights are trained on me Love is a battle we’ve done 10 rounds in the ring But I’m coming back for more Love is a hunter and I’ll be your willing prey I’ll sit quietly while you wait Won’t you fire your rockets into me I’m a sitting target and your sights are trained on me Dig your claws in deeply I don’t mind Though I know you hate me and you need to be unkind Your eyes burn brightly and they’re looking for my soul I’m not hiding anymore I won’t struggle as you tear me limb from limb My blood is on your pale white skin I tried to fight you But you stormed my barricades My shield is down And my bloodied arms are raised Won’t you fire your rockets into me I’m a sitting target and your sights are trained on me Dig your claws in deeply I don’t mind Though I know you hate me and you need to be unkind

I threw away my best years, trying to fix my mind Walking round and round inside a fence too high to climb No guardian angels, nobody I can trust And the masked protector is known to be corrupt The voice of reason Keeps repeating in my ears  The voice of reason I understand the reason why your doors are shut But that won’t feed the hunger gnawing at my gut I’ve read the data and I’ve studied every chart Too much misinformation tearing at my heart The voice of reason Keeps repeating the same lines The voice of reason The lights are out all over town The empty streets without a sound The voice of reason will resound I called your name with no reply Another tear falls from my eye  And I’ll be seeing you around Living under house arrest, I’m staring at the walls Marking off the days and weeks, I’m in for the long haul I understand the rationale, the business you conduct  I carry out your orders while I slowly deconstruct The voice of reason Keeps repeating the same lines The voice of reason The lights are out all over town The empty streets without a sound The voice of reason will resound I called your name with no reply Another tear falls from my eye  And I’ll be seeing you around

Fish can talk – Trees can walk I’m a free agent at a prisoner’s pageant I’m a dangerous dog – I sleep like a log Welcome back – You weren’t missed And your arse was never kissed But we love you just the same We like your mouth – But not your brain Welcome to the chorus – To edify not bore us A punctuation mark – Like the resting of the ark Angel eyes on sweaty thighs There were moments of crystalline stillness In the end, something kills us The urban fox exerts his right In the canteen of the night Welcome to me – Hobbies include … Microwave marriage, Springwatch Hackney, Sex, Drugs, Northern Soul And Hammersmith Bridge is falling down Living with a female spy Shandy worshippers live below Helipad on the roof Flying high above the Westway Never take the bus NEVER TAKE THE BUS

Heading for a Rapide 40 Slideout In a damp industrial town I was caught flat footed by your fallen arches And the walls came tumblin’ down The bears are running round the wood today And the snakes are hiding in the grass You’re running out of luck Cos somebody stole your shoes And you’re walking on broken glass Heading for a Rapide 40 Slideout As the brakes began to fail I was caught out by your snake tooth talking
And I started to believe your tale The bears are running round the wood today And the snakes are hiding in the grass You’re running out of luck Cos somebody stole your shoes And you’re walking on broken glass Heading for a Rapide 40 Slideout As the picture starts to sharpen I was caught out by a flash of lightning And the sky began to darken The bears are running round the wood today And the snakes are hiding in the grass You’re running out of luck Cos somebody stole your shoes And you’re walking on broken glass Heading for a Rapide 40 Slideout

about

Original Midlands post-punks Cult Figures return with their third album Between Us And Heaven, comprising twelve tracks that illustrate the seismic changes both within the band and the world at large since 2021’s critically acclaimed Deritend.

The album sees original guitarist Jon Hodgson, bassist Lee McFadden and drummer Stuart Hilton joined by new members Fraser Gillespie (lead vocals) and Steve May (guitar), as well as contributions from co-founding singer Gary Jones, who tragically lost his life in 2022, and to whose memory the album is dedicated.

Previously a member of Berlin/London electropunks Das Fluff, Steve is also a revered children’s book illustrator. Before joining the band Fraser, an enigmatic Glaswegian poet and bridge builder had little previous recording experience, and had never played a gig in his life! The enthusiasm of both, though, has solidified their essential importance to the line-up in double-quick time, their contributions helping shape the group as a powerful and original live proposition.

Once again the band worked on the album with legendary producer John Rivers (Specials, Paul Weller, Felt) at his Woodbine Street Studio in Leamington Spa – continuing a shared history dating back to Cult Figures’ 1979 debut single (and still popular live favourite) ‘Zip Nolan’, which saw Gary and Jon backed by their influential mentors, Swell Maps.

As well as acknowledging their punk-pop roots on tracks such as ‘Sitting Target’, ‘Unburdened’ and the earworm-inducing ‘Mr Producer’, Cult Figures venture into reflective territory with ‘One False Move’ and foreboding angular imagery with ‘Never Take the Bus’. The title track, meanwhile takes its lyrics from Lieutenant-Commander Thomas Woodrooffe’s landmark/inebriated 1937 radio commentary of the Fleet during King George VI’s coronation – resulting in the origin of the phrase ‘tired and emotional’.

Gary Jones’ posthumous contributions to Between Us And Heaven, include a line of lyric on ‘Mr Producer’, his final set of lyrics on ‘Rapide 40 Slideout’ (featuring a heartfelt rendition by Fraser) and the two excerpts of ‘Battle Of The Beefcakes’ – taken from a 1982 4-track recording where the vast range of voices – (all Gary’s) convincingly replicate a Welsh male voice choir!
